Concerns about the publisher were initially raised after Reuters reported that Nuverse’s parent company, ByteDance (which also owns the social media platform TikTok), had announced an internal review to “make adjustments to center on long-term strategic growth areas.” Consequently, it made the decision to restructure its gaming business.
In response, the official Marvel Snap Twitter account stated: “Some of our players have expressed their concerns regarding reported structural changes at Nuverse. The full impact of this reported restructuring is not currently known. Reuters claims that employees will be directed to cease work on unreleased games by next month, and the company plans to divest from existing released games. These sources suggest that hundreds of employees may be affected, and it’s speculated that the company has no intention of re-entering the gaming market in the future.
This year, numerous individuals within the games industry have been impacted by restructuring. Embracer Group, which owns over 100 studios including Crystal Dynamics, Deep Silver, and Aspyr, laid off 904 employees as of September 30 due to its restructuring program. This included former staff at Saints Row studio Volition Games, which was shut down in August.
In a recent statement about the company’s restructuring, Embracer Group’s interim chief strategy officer, Phil Rogers, emphasized that cutting jobs has been a “painful process,” but necessary to achieve new goals. He asserted that restructuring is essential for the company’s success.
